FAQ

Common questions

What actually moves the XAU/USD price?

Gold moves mainly on the US dollar, real interest rates and demand for safety. A stronger dollar usually pressures gold; falling real yields usually support it. Central bank buying, inflation data and geopolitical stress also shift it. None of these give a reliable signal on their own, so treat any single headline as context, not a trade.

Why is gold quoted around 4275.0 and what does that number mean?

That is the reference price in US dollars per troy ounce, and it is a snapshot, not a live quote. XAU/USD is quoted per ounce, so a price of 4275.0 means $4,275 per ounce. Your broker's quote will differ slightly because it includes its own spread and reflects its own liquidity.

Is gold more volatile than the PSE stocks I am used to?

Gold is volatile in its own way, and the comparison depends on what you hold. XAU/USD can move several dollars within minutes around US data releases, and because one lot is 100 oz, a small price move is a large peso amount. PSE stocks have daily price limits; gold does not, so gaps are possible.

Does the peso-dollar rate matter if I trade XAU/USD?

Yes, at the point where your money enters and leaves. Your profit and loss are in dollars, but your funding through GCash or bank transfer and your withdrawals are in ₱, so the conversion rate on those days affects your final result. The trade itself is priced in dollars; the peso effect sits around it.

Can I trade gold on the PSE instead of XAU/USD?

The PSE does not list XAU/USD; it is an over-the-counter spot metal pair traded through brokers on international platforms. The PSE is where you trade Philippine-listed shares. If you want gold exposure on-exchange locally you would need a listed product, which is a different instrument with different hours and costs from the XAU/USD market described here.
